Conservation Group Issues "Last Chance" Appeal

BIG BEAR, California — The renowned bald eagle pair Jackie and Shadow, residing in California's Big Bear Lake area, are at risk of abandoning their nest if a luxury residential project is developed close to their nesting site.

The conservation organization Friends of Big Bear, which operates the live camera system monitoring the eagles' daily lives, has issued a "last chance" appeal to halt the construction project located less than a mile from the eagles' nest.

In its latest statement, the organization noted that experts have warned for years that a large-scale residential development on the north shore of Big Bear Lake, within the San Bernardino National Forest, would cause "significant adverse impacts" to the bald eagle species.

Moon Camp Project: 50 Luxury Homes and a Marina

The controversial project, named Moon Camp, includes 50 luxury homes and a 50-slip marina, planned for construction on the north shore of Big Bear Lake.

According to Friends of Big Bear, the project would not only directly affect Jackie and Shadow's ability to hatch and raise their young but could also lead them to abandon the area entirely due to severe changes in their surrounding habitat.

The organization stated it has been engaged in legal battles for years, filing numerous lawsuits to prevent the construction of this project.

Fundraising Campaign After Founder's Passing

Friends of Big Bear's latest campaign focuses on fundraising to continue the legal fight, especially after the passing of the organization's Executive Director, Sandy Steers. Ms. Steers was instrumental in initiating the eagle camera system over a decade ago, allowing millions worldwide to observe the pair's lives firsthand.

Before her passing, Ms. Steers urged: "We need everyone to be a hero for Jackie and Shadow."

New Egg and Natural Threats

For years, audiences worldwide have followed the lives of this famous eagle pair live via the online camera system. Late last month, Jackie laid her first egg of the year. However, a crow attacked the nest when both eagles were absent.

Currently, the future of this famous eagle nest largely depends on the outcome of the legal cases and the final decision regarding the Moon Camp project.
