Chasing Three Marketers, Shouting Death Threats
Reginald McGee, 38, faces a series of serious charges after chasing and shooting a door-to-door salesperson for the telecommunications company AT&T in the Providence Townhomes neighborhood on the evening of February 18.
According to local station WFLA, McGee approached three marketers—two women and one man—as they went door-to-door after dark. McGee taunted them, chased them through the neighborhood, repeatedly yelling: "Where are you people!" and "I'm going to kill you!"
Camera Records At Least 10 Gunshots
McGee reportedly drew a gun from his waistband and fired at the male employee until he ran out of bullets. Security camera footage captured the sound of at least 10 gunshots, interspersed with the panicked screams of the two women and pleas for him to stop.
Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies arrived at the scene and found the victim, covered in blood, leaning against the steps of a house. The victim was conscious and provided a preliminary description of the shooter, according to body camera footage from the deputies.
Suspect Surrenders Face Down Near His Home
Three officers ran in the direction the suspected shooter had fled and found McGee near his residence, lying face down on the ground with his hands raised in surrender.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister stated: "This was a completely unnecessary escalation of violence that left someone seriously injured just for doing their job. When a disagreement escalates to gunfire, that is a criminal choice."
McGee initially claimed self-defense, but later admitted to chasing and shooting at the group of employees, according to WFLA.
Victim Shot in Leg, Suspect Charged with Attempted Murder
The victim was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to the leg, calf, and foot. Police confirmed the injuries were not life-threatening.
McGee was charged with discharging a firearm in public, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, and second-degree attempted murder.
