FULTON COUNTY, Georgia – State Representative Jan Jones, currently serving as Speaker Pro Tempore of the Georgia House, announced on Thursday that she will retire at the end of her current term in January 2027.
A Legacy of Over Two Decades
Georgia House Republicans first elected her to the Speaker Pro Tempore position in 2010. Since then, she has been continuously re-elected each term, becoming the longest-serving individual in this role in Georgia's history and currently the longest-serving in a similar capacity nationwide.
She also made history as the first female Speaker of Georgia in an interim capacity, following the passing of the late House Speaker David Ralston, before Jon Burns was officially elected.
Jones was first elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2002. Her district includes various areas in North Fulton County such as Milton, Mountain Park, and parts of Roswell and Alpharetta.
Policy Focus
During her 25 years of public service, she focused on local control, government transparency, and public education reform.
In an official statement, she shared that she will miss "the meaningful work, the opportunities to assist constituents, and the colleagues who have become close friends" since her initial election in 2002.
She also expressed pride in her achievements in education policy, including:
- Full restoration of public school funding
- Maintaining the highest teacher salaries in the Southeast region
- Expansion of the Pre-K program
- Enhancing parent choice through public charter schools and the Promise Scholarship program
Term Conclusion
Jan Jones' term will officially conclude in January 2027, ushering in a new transitional period in the leadership of the Georgia House.
