WASHINGTON, D.C. – A substance described as a "toxic chemical" was poured onto the outdoor ice rink at the Trump-Kennedy Center early Friday morning, causing severe damage to the ice surface and forcing the cancellation of the day's performance.
According to information from the center's management and Fox News, the incident has been identified as a deliberate act of vandalism.
Toxic Chemical Doused Ice Rink
Roma Daravi, the center's Vice President of Communications, posted on social media platform X that the outdoor plaza was "doused with toxic chemicals" overnight. She stated that the incident caused significant damage to the ice surface and affirmed that the center would cooperate with the investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
Images from the scene showed a one-gallon plastic jug placed in the middle of a spreading brown-black liquid stain on the ice. Officials have not yet disclosed the exact type of chemical used.
Performance Canceled, Urgent Repairs Underway
The ice rink was installed for the Canadian ice skating art troupe Le Patin Libre, which was scheduled to perform at the center through Sunday. Due to the damage from the vandalism, Friday evening's performance was forced to be canceled.
Management stated that they are urgently repairing the ice surface so that the remaining weekend performances can proceed as planned.
Chairman Grenell Expresses Outrage
Mr. Richard Grenell, Chairman of the Trump-Kennedy Center, expressed his outrage on social media, calling it a "sad and unnecessary" act. He stated that the center has received numerous serious threats recently and called on politicians to speak out before more severe consequences occur.
Context of Controversy
The Trump-Kennedy Center has recently faced numerous controversies and a series of canceled performances after President Trump changed its leadership and affixed his name to the building's facade.
Earlier this month, President Trump announced that the center would close for two years, beginning July 4, for major renovations.
The incident is currently under investigation by the United States Park Police.
