Many major US cruise lines have decided to divert their itineraries, avoiding popular Mexican tourist ports due to widespread violence. This decision comes after the death of a top drug cartel leader, which has caused serious instability in several regions.
Norwegian Cruise Line announced that its ship Norwegian Bliss, with a capacity of approximately 4,000 passengers, will bypass its stop in the resort city of Puerto Vallarta. Similarly, Carnival Corp has also instructed its Royal Princess ship not to dock there to ensure the safety of passengers currently on their journey.
Changes to Cruise Ship Itineraries
The Royal Princess has now been instructed to extend its time docked in Cabo San Lucas instead of proceeding to conflict-ridden areas. Afterward, the ship is expected to sail to Mazatlán, a location approximately 280 miles north of Puerto Vallarta, to steer clear of security hotspots.
Carnival has also issued similar directives for the Zuiderdam, operated by its subsidiary Holland America. Instead of visiting Mexican ports as originally planned, this ship will substitute a day at sea to await stabilization of the situation.
Causes of Escalating Violence
The security situation deteriorated after the death of drug lord Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This event has led to widespread retaliatory attacks in Jalisco state and at least 19 other states across Mexico.
Gang members have set up over 2,500 roadblocks by burning and detonating numerous public transportation vehicles. In light of these developments, several major US and Canadian airlines also announced the cancellation of flights to Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara airports last weekend.
The US Department of State has now issued an advisory, urging US citizens in the area to shelter in place immediately. Travelers are instructed to remain indoors and absolutely not move outside until authorities can bring the violent situation under control.
